Storm Petrels

Last night we went tape luring.

We had to stay up until 2:37am and we were really tired.
But it was worth it because we caught 3 storm petrels, it wasnt
as dark as we thought so it wasnt ideal really.

But the storm petrels were so cute and they had a very nice
oily smell, there really small and cool and it was the first time I had
ever done tape-luring so I was really exited!
Storm petrels have a little tube on top of thier beaks but the tube isnt
thier nostril its used to vomit from, which probably isnt very nice actually.

When we caught the first one it vomited on my step-dads hand, it was funny, but
storm petrels are so small i dont think it would bother you, being vomited on
by a fulmar would be discusting though because thier the same size as sea gulls.

But I have a picture of a storm petrel here - please note : there is a ring on the storm petrels foot, this is what bird rings look like.

Terns,Kestrels,Buzzards and Dunlins

Today me and my step-dad went for a walk,
we went to the gouldrens near machrihanoich and saw lots of birds.

We Saw some Dunlins and Terns at the beach, and a buzzard up at the actual gouldrens
but it was chased away by a Kestrel.

There were quite a few Herring Gulls out on rocks, and some young terns hovering
about.
I had loads of fun, and loved watching all the birds!

The BTO and the RSPB

Hiya!

Im MollyJ,
my step-dad works with the BTO and he conservates
british birds.

Conservation has 2 main ways of working,

1. Bird Watching
2. Catching and Netting

Im going to tell you about netting first!

Netting is where you set up a net in a suttible area,
The net can be shut when not in use.
When the net is open birds will begin to fly in,
bird nets are humane and dont harm the birds.

Bird Watching is as simple as it sounds,
you find birds and watch them and note down what they are.

Thats the simplest way to explane what me and my step-dad do,
so keep reading my blogs and learn more about our great adventures!
